The Future Minerals Leadership Committee (FMLC), a visionary initiative by Turtle Island Connection in partnership with Canada’s leading minerals exploration associations, brings together a dynamic group of young Indigenous and non-Indigenous leaders. Together, we are setting new standards for sustainability and Indigenous methodologies in mineral exploration.

About the FMLC

Established by Turtle Island Connection, the FMLC consists of 8 dedicated young professionals tasked with providing strategic insights, developing policies, and promoting sustainable practices within the mineral exploration industry. Our committee is designed to reflect a balanced representation of diverse perspectives and skill sets.

purpose of the committee

  • To foster a new generation of leadership that reflects both Indigenous and non-Indigenous voices.

 

  • To provide Industry leaders with innovative insights into mineral exploration, focusing on environmental sustainability and Indigenous protocol.

 

  • To create and implement policy recommendations that influences the mineral exploration industry’s direction, ensuring they align with principles of environmental, economic, and social sustainability through an Indigenous lens.

How we operate

Composition: Comprising 8 Indigenous and 7 non-Indigenous members, our committee brings together experts and emerging leaders from mineral exploration, environmental sustainability, and policy development.

Meetings: We meet quarterly to review progress and align our goals with the strategic directions of TIC.

Training: Members benefit from comprehensive training in leadership, mineral exploration, environmental policies, and Indigenous governance, provided through the Turtle Island Community platform.

Public Engagement: The FMLC will actively participate in Indigenous community and industry events, including the AME Roundup 2025.

Advisory Role: As advisors, the committee offers recommendations that enhance sustainability across economic, environmental, and social dimensions.

Phase 1: Recruitment and Program Design

 

Establish the Future Minerals Leadership Committee and appoint the Chairperson, Steering Committee, and Voting Members through volunteer recruitment.

Hold the First Official Meeting to develop and sign the group Memorandum of Understanding.

Train youth on the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, mineral exploration, and other relevant areas.

Identify and develop youth priorities.

Create communication materials to engage community youth and inform the public about the policy document and ongoing projects.

Phase 2: Training, Community engagement and policy development

 

Develop strategic plans and programs focused on leadership development, sustainability, and community collaboration.

Organize and lead community consultations with the industry partners.

Facilitate workshops and informational sessions to ensure community members are informed and involved in the planning process.

Develop materials for mineral exploration industry use.

Phase 3: Policy implementation and industry engagement

 

Conduct the Future Minerals Leadership Council Technical Talk and prepare committees.

Engage industry leaders, educational institutions, and technical groups to collaboratively develop educational programs and career-building activities

Establish structures for youth to become decision-makers in their career paths.
